I'm not really sure when my love of plants began. My first memory of growing something in a pot began at the age of four or five. I remember loving strawberries when I was a kid, and one day my grandparent bought me a strawberry plant. To make sure that I cared for it properly, my grandparents hung the plant in their screen-enclosed pool area, where each day I would go out and check on it, water it, and care for it.
Several weeks went by and I was so excited watching my plant grow two strawberries. I remember my grandfather scooping me up in his arms and lifting me up to check. Then, the day came to pick my strawberry. He lifted me in his arms, and I pulled my tiny red strawberry off the plant. Without rinsing it, I popped it in my mouth and made a big, yummy noise. My grandfather asked if it was good, to which I remember replying, "It's the best strawberry I have ever tasted."
Throughout my childhood, I was blessed to be around plants. At four years old, my grandmother opened a flower shop in our local town. I remember during the holidays that her living room would be filled with poinsettias and as kids, my brother and I would often play in them.
After my grandmother sold her flower shop to my mom and dad, we were around flowers even more. We learned about different types of flowers and how to arrange them, and would often help deliver flowers on the delivery trucks.
To this day, 41 years later, my dad still owns the flower shop, Beacon Woods Florist, and flowers are still a big part of our lives.
Another strong influence for my love of plants came from our family's annual camping trip to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. From the time I was eight years old, we vacationed and camped in the national park for a week each summer. We would hike and play in the beautiful river. It was here that I began a deep appreciation for nature.
Each summer I would enjoy walks in the woods, breathing fresh air, and taking in the lush greenery around me. It's quite a change from our coastal beach living in Florida. I found a deep interest in the history of the people who lived in the mountains, especially the Native Americans. I found it fascinating how they lived off the land. They didn't have grocery stores or pharmacies to run to. They knew what to pick, what to grow, what to harvest, and how to live off the natural land. I found this fascinating.
Eight years ago, in an effort to help revitalize my struggling hometown, I opened a tearoom and created my own tea brand, Driftwood Tea Company. I was so excited to learn about the many benefits of different teas and herbals, and that love has only grown over the past several years.
I have enjoyed studying tea and becoming Florida's only World Tea Academy Certified Tea Sommelier. But beyond my love of tea, the entire world of plant-based health and wellness has become a broader focus for me.
